Norwegian Broadband and Wireless Growth Offset by Fixed-Line Losses

Norway’s telecommunications market generated revenues of NOK 14.894-billion in the first half of 2007, up a very modest 1% from the same period a year earlier, as growth in broadband and wireless was offset by a significant decline in fixed-line telephone use.

The mobile phone sector generated NOK 7.382-billion for the six-month period, up 5% from a year earlier. This was driven by a 7% increase in the number of wireless subscribers (to 5.21 million), and a 21% jump in overall airtime usage (to 4.558 billion minutes).

Norwegian broadband revenue also increased, to NOK 2.842-billion, a 17% jump from H1 2006.

Fixed-line telephone revenues, however, declined 14% to a value of just NOK 3.888-billion – barely half that of the wireless market. Traffic was down 20% to 5.379 billion minutes, while the number of fixed-line subscribers dropped more than 50,000 to 2.030 million.
