Regional U.S. wireless carrier, Alltel Corp., has released a new service called Voice2TXT, allowing customers to receive their voicemail messages in SMS text format.

Voice2TXT is based on technology from the British firm, SpinVox. Canada’s top cell phone carrier, Rogers Wireless, launched a similar service based on SpinVox technology last week.

“It’ll appeal to a broad customer base … people who are in meetings quite regularly and can’t take a phone call; it’s very useful in those settings,” commented Alltel’s senior vice president of product management, Wade McGill. “It was one of those services that once you get it, you don’t want to give it up,” he added, describing the reaction of a product test group.

The Voice2TXT service starts at $4.99/month for up to 20 voicemail conversions, or $19.99/month for up to 100.

Little Rock, Arkansas-based Alltel currently serves some 12 million cell phone users in 35 U.S. states.
