U.S. cell phone giant, AT&T, agreed to swap a number of wireless assets with rival, Verizon Wireless, earlier this week, so as to meet regulatory requirements connected with its recent acquisition of Dobson Communications.

The deal will also benefit Verizon Wireless, which is set to buy out Rural Cellular, and plans to transfer certain network assets, licenses, and subscribers of that company to AT&T.

The swap, which is due for completion by mid-2008, will extend AT&T’s service footprint in eastern U.S. states like New York and Vermont.
