Russia Launches Satellites for GLONASS Navigation System
10:55 pm on December 27, 2007 | Category: Wireless Technology
Russia’s military has successfully launched a rocket carrying at least three more navigation satellites, as part of a plan to create its own global navigation system to rival America’s GPS.
Russia’s GLONASS mapping system already covers most of Russia, and is expected to cover the entire globe once all 24 of its navigation satellites are up and running by the end of 2009.
The Soviet Union began working on GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System) in the mid-1970s, as a way to give its armed forces their exact bearings around the world. The plan withered in the late 1990s due to Russia’s economic troubles, but has been revived by current president, Vladimir Putin.
