Telecommunications revenues in the South American country of Uruguay are expected to total at least US$1.07 billion in 2012, according to a recent study by Signals Telecom Consulting.

Signals expects Uruguay’s telecom sector to grow at a compound annual rate of 4% between 2007 and 2012, as mobile phone carriers continue to experience success competing with the country’s fixed-line telephone monopoly, Antel.

Analysts said that the combined revenue of Uruguay’s mobile phone carriers should exceed Antel’s fixed-line revenues by the end of 2007. The country’s mobile penetration rate currently stands at around 76.5%, and is likely to reach 100% by 2011.
