International telecom equipment maker, Alcatel-Lucent, has confirmed reports that it plans to open a WiMAX Application and Interoperability Testing center in Taiwan.

The groundwork for Alcatel-Lucent’s new testing center was laid by an agreement with the Taiwanese government last October, which aims to promote the development of WiMAX products and establish a “robust and mature WiMAX ecosystem” in Taiwan. Local equipment manufacturers will be given access to the center to test their WiMAX-enabled consumer premises equipment (CPE).

“Our government encourages multinational enterprises to set up R&D centers in Taiwan, and we are very pleased that Alcatel-Lucent chose Taiwan to build their WiMAX IOT center,” commented the country’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Steve Ruey-Long Chen.
