Asia will be home to more than 40 million Mobile WiMAX subscribers by 2013, accounting for more than 50% of the global market for the technology, according to a recent study by Juniper Research.
The study explored the potential of Mobile WiMAX on a country-by-country basis and determined that markets like India, Korea, Pakistan, Taiwan, and Australia are among the most suited for rapid WiMAX expansion in the years to come. Analysts explored the potential application of 802.16e WiMAX in remote and underserved areas, as well as the possible impact of favourable government programs in countries like Taiwan.
Juniper Research expects the worldwide market for Mobile WiMAX services to total $23 billion in 2013, with more than half of all subscribers residing in Asia.
“We anticipate that mobile usage will develop after initial demand for fixed and portable services — WiMAX 802.16e is a flexible platform that can operate in all three modes of usage,†commented Howard Wilcox, author of the Juniper report. “Mobile WiMAX will represent a single digit proportion of the Asian mobile broadband base by 2013, which will be a tremendous achievement for this new technology platform.â€
The availability of WiMAX-compatible devices, however, along with the willingness of governments to award 802.16e wireless spectrum licenses, will be crucial wildcard factors that could make or break the global success of Mobile WiMAX.
“Mobile WiMAX will be a device-based technology, whether on handsets, laptops, datacards, or other types of consumer device such as media players. Any lack of availability will clearly inhibit market take-up,†Wilcox explained. “Over the next year licences in countries such as India, Japan and Thailand, as well as in more countries in other regions, will be auctioned. Timely award of these licences will accelerate market development.â€
