Wireless broadband provider, Clearwire Corp., and American cell phone giant, Sprint Nextel, are still hoping to combine their up-and-coming WiMAX networks into a nationwide wireless internet business.

The two companies have never stopped negotiating, according to Clearwire CEO, Ben Wolff, despite the dissolution of their formal partnership in November. By working in concert, both carriers hope to ensure that customers can roam between their respective wireless broadband networks.

“If we weren’t aligned on features and functionality, roaming would be difficult, so having alignments is a big step,” Wolff explained, noting that the companies are also working together on interoperability testing with device makers.

“All the information gathered from our trial in Portland is being shared with Sprint,” he said. “And Sprint is sharing information about their trials with a level of cooperation that moves the ball forward faster.”

At this point in time, Sprint and Clearwire may also be discussing a joint venture that would attract funding from Intel, a major WiMAX backer, according to a recent report in the Wall Street Journal.

    1. I think Sprint will get a boost anyway from Intel just by flooding the market with WiMAX enabled mobile pcs.
