Court Orders Qualcomm to Stop Selling Patent-Infringing 3G Wireless Chips

A federal judge has ordered San Diego-based chipmaker, Qualcomm, to stop selling new 3G wireless chips that infringe on the patents of rival firm, Broadcom.

U.S. District Judge, James Selna, ruled that Qualcomm can continue selling offending products that were on the market before May 29, 2007, but only if it pays royalties to Broadcom. May 29 is the date when a jury found Qualcomm guilty of patent infringement.

This latest ruling is part of a legal battle dating back to May 2005. Broadcom agreed in November 2007 to accept damages of $19.6 million for Qualcomm’s infringement.
