American telecom giant, Verizon Communications, announced Monday that it had signed up more than 1 million FiOS TV subscribers, making it the tenth largest pay-TV provider in the U.S. after less than 30 months in the video business.

Launched in September 2005, Verizon added 736,000 customers in 2007, for a customer base of 943,000 at the end of December. The company hit 1-million FiOS TV users a few days ago, and now has a total of 1.8 television subscribers, including satellite customers through its partnership with DirecTV.

“Some experts doubted that we could come this far this fast,” commented Verizon Telecom president, Virginia Ruesterholz. “While we’re delighted to pass the 1 million milestone, we know that the real winners are our customers, who now have a genuine choice for their cable television service.”

Verizon FiOS currently has a presence in 13 states, including California, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, and Virginia. The next largest competitor in the up-and-coming IPTV market, AT&T U-verse, reported having 231,000 television subscribers at the end of 2007.
