Britain’s broadband prices hit a new low recently, after dropping more than 35% in the past four years.

High-speed internet customers in the UK now pay an average of just £17.19 per month, down from £26.66 per month in December 2003, according to data from uSwitch.com, a price comparison website.

AOL has led the pack in terms of price reductions, dropping the price of its most popular DSL package from £27.99 to £14.99 over the four-year period.

Broadband connections have also gotten significantly faster, with download speeds averaging 8-Mbps in December 2007, down from 0.5-Mbps four years earlier.

The fastest high-speed internet service at the end of 2003 was a 2-Mbps package from Telewest. Today, ISPs are constantly one-upping each other in terms of speed. Virgin Media recently announced plans to deploy a super-fast 50-Mbps broadband service by the end of this year.

“With broadband both the cheapest and the fastest it’s ever been, our love affair with the internet is set to reach great heights this year,” commented Steve Weller, head of communications services at uSwitch.com. “We predict that prices will stabilize, but customers will be offered more for their money, with companies continuing to increase speeds.”
