Satellite broadband technology – useful for providing high-speed internet access in rural and remote areas – will be used in close to 1.3 million U.S. households by the end of 2011, according to research by Pike & Fischer.

Pike & Fischer’s new report, entitled “The Satellite Broadband Market Opportunity,” mentions a few companies that are already capitalizing on satellite internet services, crediting Hughesnet, WildBlue, and ViaSat for narrowing the digital divide in rural location where DSL and cable modem service are not available.

Even as the market expands, however, satellite ISPs will continue to face challenges in gaining traction, the report predicts. The high cost of launching satellites, for instance, could make it difficult to price satellite services competitively, especially since rural customers are generally less able to afford them.
