Growth in Spanish broadband subscriptions increased to 122,834 new connections in January 2008, up 20% from a year earlier, according to Spain’s telecom watchdog, CMT.

This bring’s Spain’s broadband penetration rate to 18 subscriptions per 100 inhabitants, or approximately 40% of Spanish households, mostly thanks to high infrastructure investment by small ISPs, CMT said.

Incumbent telecom provider, Telefonica, signed up 61,134 high-speed internet customers in the first month of 2008, bringing its total to 4.6 million subscribers, or 57% of the national total.
