Europe Leads Growth in IPTV Subscriptions

The number of households using IPTV worldwide numbered more than 14 million at the end of 2007, up from just 4.7 million at the end of 2006, according to new data from Parks Associates.
Europe was the leading driver of this astounding growth, with subscriber growth of more than 250% last year. The continent now accounts for almost 60% of IPTV customers worldwide.
“IPTV services provide European operators with a critical toehold in attracting and retaining customers,” commented Parks Associates vice president, Kurt Scherf. “However, IPTV is a small part of a crowded market of terrestrial, satellite and cable offerings, and the competition will be intense.”
A recent eMarketer report estimated that there were 12.5 million IPTV-connected households globally in last 2007 with 7.5 million of these in Europe. Asia-Pacific was the second biggest IPTV market in 2007 with 3.3 million subscriptions, followed by the United States with a mere 1.2 million.
eMarketer expects global IPTV penetration to reach 61.1 million households by the end of 2012.
