Worldwide sales of Wireless Local Area Networking (WLAN) equipment, including switches, controllers, and access points, reached $1.9 billion in 2007, up 20% from the year before, as increased roll-out of enterprise wireless networks and the debut of 802.11n Wi-Fi technology fueled revenue growth.

Sales of single-mode enterprise Wi-Fi phones, meanwhile, jumped 61% from 2007, Infonetics Research revealed in its latest quarterly report.

“Wireless LAN is becoming an increasingly ubiquitous technology and is commonly embedded into laptops, PDAs, phones, game consoles, and media adapters,” commented Infonetics Research analyst, Richard Webb. “Its widespread availability, affordability, flexibility and usage will make it an important technology even as other high speed wireless technologies like 3.5G and mobile WiMAX come to the fore.”

“Additionally, WiFi-enabled smartphones like the iPhone and RIM’s WiFi Blackberry will significantly increase WiFi hotspot traffic,” Webb went on to say, noting that “in January 2008, AT&T, which offers the iPhone in the US, took over Starbucks’ hotspots from T-Mobile, giving this segment an injection of fresh stimulus.”

Infonetics expects worldwide WLAN revenue to hit $3.4 billion annually by 2011.
