Avaya Lays Off 400 More Employees, Amid Economic Weakness
6:00 am on May 23, 2008 | Category: Business, Corporate
American telecom equipment maker, Avaya Inc., is cutting an additional 400 jobs this month, due to weakness in the economy and slow sales in key market segments.
Avaya already cut 600 employees earlier this year through layoffs, attrition, and retirements.
The latest round of job cuts will mostly affect the company’s headquarters in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, according to spokeswoman, Deb Kline.
Avaya had 34,000 employees after being spun off by Lucent Technologies in 2000, but has since slimmed down its work force through repeated restructuring plans, and now employs approximately 18,000. It was a publicly traded company until last year, when it was acquired by two private equity firms.
