The BBC’s popular web-based television catch-up software, iPlayer, has been downloaded an astonishing 75 million times, the broadcaster announced earlier this week.

iPlayer allows users to stream TV programming to their personal computers and catch up on shows they may have missed. It has earned glowing reviews from everyone except internet service providers, who say that all the extra online video traffic is putting a burden on their networks. Some ISPs have even suggested that the BBC should help pay the costs of the additional bandwidth usage.

The BBC’s latest statistics, which were announced at the recent Google Zeitgeist 2008 event in London, indicate that iPlayer was used to download 21 million programs in April, representing a 21% jump from the month before.
