New York-based telecom giant, Verizon Communications, is now America’s eleventh largest pay-TV provider, thanks to aggressive expansion of its FiOS TV network over the past two years.
Verizon has added more than 850,000 FiOS TV subscribers in the past 12 months, announcing that it had surpassed 1 million customers for the service in January. This number has since grown to 1.2 million, and the company also serves 1.8 million broadband internet customers with its ever-expanding fiber-optic telecommunications network.
The telecom giant is now on the brink of surpassing regional cable providers, Mediacom Communications and Suddenlink Communication, each of which serves approximately 1.3 million cable television subscribers. As Verizon’s becomes a top-10 pay-TV provider, analysts believe competition will continue to heat up, as big cable companies strive to defend their core market.
“There is quite a bit of competitive fighting to take place over the next several years,” wrote telecom analyst, Jeff Kagan, in a recent research note. “However, (FiOS) performance shows strong growth.”
