Vodafone Group CEO, Arun Sarin, will step down from his top job on July 28, the multinational wireless operator announced yesterday.

Sarin has been Chief Executive at Vodafone since July 2003, before which he served as a non-executive director. He has been with the company since 1999.

Under Sarin’s leadership, Vodafone has aggressively expanded into new international markets, most recently with the acquisition of Hutchison Essar, an Indian mobile phone operator with more than 40 million subscribers. That move boosted Vodafone’s global customer base to more than 260 million, allowing Sarin to exit on a high note.

Sarin will be replaced by deputy CEO, Vittorio Calao, at the company’s annual general meeting in July. Calao has previously served as the head of Vodafone Italy, and as the company’s regional CEO for Southern Europe.
