American telecom giant, AT&T Inc., said on Thursday that it would invest $80 million this year to expand its wireless network in upstate New York, as part of a $250 million, four-year project, involving the company’s Binghamton and Elmira service areas.
This year’s plan includes more than 50 new cell sites in upstate New York. Sites at Ingraham Hill, Kirkwood, Triangle, Richford and Sanford. In the Elmira area, AT&T will install new cell sites in Spencer and Van Etten, which are scheduled to “go live” by the end of the summer.
In the fall, AT&T plans to extend its 3G mobile broadband network to additional cell sites, bringing mobile broadband capability to customers in parts of Broome, Tioga and Chemung counties.
The forthcoming upgrades will enhance voice quality and enable customers to enjoy faster connection speeds with laptops and mobile phones, according to AT&T’s general manager of wireless operations in upstate New York, Bob Holliday.
