America’s leading telecom operator, AT&T Inc., confirmed this week that its U-verse IPTV service has started offering concurrent high-definition (HD) video streams to residential consumers in some markets, correcting a key shortcoming of the service.

Other IPTV services, including Verizon FiOS, already support concurrent HDTV streams, allowing users to view one program in HD, while recording another on a DVR at the same time.

Some consumers have expressed frustration with AT&T’s lack of support for concurrent HD feeds, apparently prompting the telecom giant to act, especially considering Verizon’s plans to challenge AT&T head-to-head in certain markets.

“We’ve begun rolling out the ability to watch or record two HD programs simultaneously,” said one AT&T spokesperson, adding that the enhancement required changes in the company’s video hub offices and in provisioning systems.
