IPTV Operators Must Differentiate Next-Generation TV Services, Says ABI

IPTV providers around the globe will need to differentiate themselves from other pay-TV providers in the coming years, so as to carve out a distinct identity for their industry, according to a recent report by ABI Research.
Now that IPTV has established itself on a global scale, “IPTV operators must now leverage the characteristics of the new platform to produce a differentiated offering, redefining the experience of television,†according to senior ABI Research analyst, Cesar Bachelet.
To achieve this end, Bachelet suggests that operators should integrate web content with traditional broadcast content, allow users to access DVR functionality remotely over the internet, and implement targeted advertising so as to open up new possibilities for media buyers.
“From a technology perspective, all the tools are there, enabling IPTV operators to move to the next level and bring greater choice, convenience and control to consumers,†Mr. Bachelet commented. “However, operators must tread carefully in order not to overwhelm subscribers with too many new features at once, and business models still need to be defined for some of the new value-added services in order to monetise them without alienating subscribers.â€
