JetBlue Airways’ LiveTV division has agreed to acquire Verizon’s Airfone business, stepping up efforts to offer in-flight email and internet communication services, the Wall Street Journal reported yesterday.

LiveTV already provides in-flight satellite television service for JetBlue and other airlines, including Continental. It will gain control of 100 air-to-ground communications towers, as well as numerous corporate and government contracts, as a result of the Airfone acquisition, which will be finalized on January 1, 2009.

This deal represents significant progress for LiveTV, as it strives to meet intense demand for in-flight email and broadband services.
