Mozilla Hopes to Set Guinness World Record with Firefox 3.0

Mozilla Corporation, the open source community responsible for the world’s second most popular web browser, Firefox, is hoping to get into the Guinness Book of Records today (June 17, 2008) for the most software downloads in a single 24-hour period.
The Mozilla browser’s latest incarnation, Firefox 3.0, is hoping to meet the lofty goal of 5 million downloads in its first day of availability. Firefox 2.0 managed to rack up 1.6 million downloads in its first 24 hours.
Mozilla has already succeeded in creating plenty of hype for its new product, which will load basic web pages in just 60 milliseconds – about seven times faster than Microsoft’s most recent Internet Explorer browser, which has the edge of coming pre-packaged with Windows operating systems.
The most talked about feature of Firefox 3.0, however, is the “AwesomeBar,” a new way of navigating bookmarks and history, which effectively turns the address bar at the top of the browser into a built-in search engine.
“The staid and plain URL bar has been transformed into a much, much more powerful and useful tool,” explained Deb Richardson, a Mozilla employee. “It lets you use the URL field of your browser to do a keyword search of your history and bookmarks.”
“No longer do you have to know the domain of the page you’re looking for — the AwesomeBar will match what you’re typing (even multiple words) against the URLs, page titles and tags in your bookmarks and history, returning results sorted by ‘frecency’ (a combination of frequency and recency).”
Firefox 3.0 is now available as a free download at GetFirefox.com.
