Network Television Websites See Increased Traffic

Websites of major broadcast networks are gaining in popularity, as viewers seek to “time-shift,” and watch their favourite shows online when they can’t be in front of the TV at the scheduled time.

Younger viewers in particular are taking part in this trend, with males aged 18 to 24 most likely to visit Fox.com’s online television portal, and females in the same age range likely to visit ABC.com. CBS.com is also making a strong play for this market, and recently announced plans to upgrade its online video player.

Networks are able to cash in on the internet TV craze by showing web-based video ads. This complements their regular broadcast advertising revenue, according to most research, as opposed to cannibalizing it.

A plurality of viewers (44%) say that online video ads are just as acceptable as ads on TV shows, while 8% describe the ads as more acceptable, and 19% say they are less, according to research by AdvertisingAge. 29% of respondents answered that they were unsure.

In terms of ad quantity, most users view internet-based TV as a “good deal,” in that less time is spent watching advertisements, when compared to traditional broadcast TV.
