New York’s incumbent telecom operator, Verizon Communications Inc., said this week that it expects the state’s Public Service Commission to approve its FiOS TV service for New York City sometime in July.

“Our plan is to cover all of the 3.1 million households in all five boroughs in the next five to six years. We will start this year as soon as we receive the approval of the New York Public Service Commission, which we expect will be next month,” said Verizon’s Chief Operating Officer, Denny Strigl, in a speech at the recent NXTcomm telecom trade show in Las Vegas.

By launching FiOS TV, Verizon is hoping to compete with New York City’s two dominant cable companies, Time Warner Cable and Cablevision Systems.
