American telecom giant, Verizon Communications, is attempting to leapfrog the competition in terms of internet bandwidth, by making its 50/20-Mbps FiOS data offering available throughout its entire fiber-optic service footprint.

Up until now, the ultra high-speed internet service, which offers 50-Mbps downloads and 20-Mbps uploads, has only been available in Connecticut, Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island. Beginning next week, it will be extended to FiOS markets in California, Delaware, Indiana, Maryland, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and Washington, replacing 15/15-Mbps and 30/15-Mbps plans in those regions.

The company won’t stop there, however, and is already gunning for higher maximum broadband speeds.

“The appetite for bandwidth shows no signs of slowing down,” commented Verizon COO, Denny Strigl, at the NXTcomm telecom trade show in Las Vegas this week. “Neither will we. We’ve already had successful trials of the 100-megabit home, which will be a reality faster than anybody thinks.”
