Verizon, Sprint, and Time Warner Agree to Block Child Porn Websites

Three of America’s leading internet service providers have struck a deal with New York State Attorney General, Andrew Cuomo, to block access to websites and newsgroups where child pornography is available.
The decision comes after an eight-month undercover investigation, in which government investigators discovered 11,000 pornographic images of children on 88 internet newsgroups. Verizon Communications, Sprint Nextel, and Time Warner Cable have all agreed to block access to illegal pornography, at the Attorney General’s discretion.
“These companies are leading the industry and instituting new and innovative ways to stop their service from being used by people looking to distribute and access child pornography,” Cuomo said in a statement. “I call on all Internet Service Providers to follow their example and help deter the spread of online child porn.”
Some observers have raised concerns, however, that American ISP’s are being forced into the position of censors, as the government determines which online content is and isn’t acceptable. This could potentially open up a slippery slope where adult pornography and other types of “inappropriate” content is censored.
