For better or worse, Chicago subway riders can expect to hear more cell phone chatting in the future, with U.S. Cellular now offering underground wireless service in the city, and Verizon Wireless working on a similar deal with the Chicago Transit Authority.

CTA personnel will be able to use Verizon cell phones underground by the end of next month, and the general population will be able to do the same sometime afterward.

“We are trying to move it along as quickly as we possibly can,” commented Carolyn Schamberger, a Verizon spokeswoman.

Verizon currently serves some 67.2 million cell phone users nationwide, compared to only 6 million U.S. cellular subscribers.

The issue of wireless expansion underground and in the air has provoked debate between commuters hoping to make more efficient use of their time, and other passengers who prefer a quiet ride.
