Network equipment giant, Cisco Systems, announced on Wednesday that it is acquiring PostPath, a firm that competes with Microsoft Exchange in the email and calendaring software market, in a deal worth $215 million.

The acquisition of PostPath, which describes its Linux-based product as “the only drop-in natively interoperable alternative to Microsoft Exachange,” will supplement Cisco’s WebEx Connect collaboration platform, adding email and calendar functionality.

“The acquisition of PostPath complements our strategy to develop an integrated collaboration platform designed for how we work today and into the future, providing real productivity gains and a more satisfying user experience,” said the senior vice president of Cisco’s Collaboration Software Group, Doug Dennerline.

Cisco expects to complete the acquisition during its current fiscal quarter, after which PostPath employees will be integrated into the company’s Collaboration Software Group.
