San Jose, California-based computer networking giant, Cisco Systems, has combined the product engineering teams that develop small to medium-sized business (SMB) products under the Cisco and Linksys brands.

Cisco, which acquired Linksys in 2003, also said that it has merged the Linksys Partner Connection program into its Cisco Registered Channel Partners program, changing the designations of some 20,000 Linksys resellers. The company will continue to sell products under the Linksys brand, however, and has no plans to abandon its now-familiar dual branding strategy.

Cisco says that the reorganization will focus on targeting the SMB sector where Linksys-branded wireless routers and other products face stiff competition from rivals, Netgear and D-Link Systems.

“The SMB market continues to present tremendous growth potential for Cisco and our channel partners, and we have been successfully serving the sector with solutions from both Cisco and Linksys,” said Cisco’s vice president of small business sales, Andrew Sage. “We believe that taking a coordinated approach across technology and go-to-market strategies is a natural evolution that brings greater synergies to our customers and channel partners alike.”
