The number of households with home networks is on path to grow 50% for the two-year period ending December 31, 2008, according to a new study by Parks Associates.

Home networking solutions for broadband and file sharing will be present in 168 million households worldwide by the end of this year, up from 114 million at the end of 2006. This ongoing growth will lay the groundwork for the international expansion of multimedia networking, Parks analysts predicted.

“Broadband growth pushed Europe ahead of North America in terms of home network adoption,” said Parks Associates vice president and principal analyst, Kurt Scherf. “With the network in place, providers will tie in high-demand entertainment services. By 2012, over one-third of networked nodes worldwide will have entertainment or multimedia functionality, with particularly strong growth in IPTV services.”
