The worldwide customer base of HSDPA wireless broadband users almost quadrupled in the past year, topping 50 million, according to the GSM Association.
That’s up from just 11 million one year ago according to the London, England-based mobile technology association, which expects HSDPA subscriber additions to reach 4 million per month by the end of this year.
HSDPA broadband services are now offered by 191 companies around the globe, and are available on more than 740 wireless devices, including handsets, smartphones, and notebook computers. HSDPA, which offers download rates comparable to DSL, has actually started cutting into fixed-line broadband growth in Sweden and Finland, according to TeliaSonera AB, the dominant telephone company in that region.
“These figures highlight the global success of mobile broadband and the fact that we are continuing to see greater and greater economies of scale,” said GSM Association CEO, Rob Conway, in a statement.
