Nortel Networks has won a contract to provide Russia’s Comstar-United TeleSystems with equipment for its forthcoming WiMAX network in Moscow.
Nortel will provide Comstar with 160 Mobile WiMAX BTS 5020 base stations, which will operate in the 2.5- to 2.7-GHz frequency band.
The Russian WiMAX market is growing quickly as companies like Comstar leverage the technology’s speed, capacity, and cost effective nature to expand their operations and address demand for wireless broadband services. The number of WiMAX subscribers in Russia is likely to reach 1.7 million in 2010 and 4.3 million in 2012, according to recent estimates by Rethink Research Associates.
