Waterloo, Ontario-based wireless device maker, Research In Motion, has unveiled its latest smartphone, the BlackBerry Bold, in a bid to compete with Apple’s popular iPhone device.

Like the recently relaunched iPhone, the BlackBerry Bold can access the internet and download files over a next-generation 3G cellular network, and comes with built-in GPS navigation technology. It also features a generous 480×320 LCD display, 624-MHz processor, and 1-GB of internal memory

In terms of entertainment features, the BlackBerry Bold boasts an advanced media player capable of quickly displaying pictures and slide shows, playing movies, and managing an entire digital music collection. Its 2-megapixel digital camera features a built-in flash and digital zoom, and is capable of recording videos.

“The BlackBerry Bold is a breakthrough smartphone for both professional and personal use. We are very pleased to be working with (wireless carrier) A1 to provide Austrian customers with a superior mobile experience that further enhances the renowned functionality and usability of the industry leading BlackBerry solution,” said RIM chief operating officer Don Morrison, upon launching the device in Austria.

The new smartphone will be made available in numerous additional markets in the weeks to come.
