British quadruple-play telecom giant, Virgin Media, announced last week that the percentage of subscribers accessing its Video On Demand service had surpassed 50% for the first time, putting it far ahead of most of international competitors.
Virgin said that the total number of VOD views on its network increased from 34 million in January to 45 million in August.
“We are clearly on the precipice of some fundamental changes in the way people watch TV,” commented Virgin Media CEO, Neil Berkett. “The giant leaps we have taken, this year alone, show how popular on-demand viewing has become and as we continue to add compelling programming and develop innovative new way of accessing it, we will certainly enter a new era of television.”
Virgin’s music on demand service also hit a new high in August, being access 16 million times over the course of the month.
