Internet retail giant, Amazon, is attempting to expand its position in the U.S. home movie market, introducing its own browser-based Video On Demand service that aims to compete with Apple iTunes.

Amazon.com users can now instantly watch thousands ad-free movies and TV shows on any PC or Mac, starting at a pay-per-view rate of just $1.99. Users previously had to wait for a movie to download, then watch it on a PC using Amazon’s Unbox software, or load it onto a TiVo DVR.

Amazon Video On Demand, as the new service is called, is also available through Sony’s Bravia Internet Video Link, a device that streams internet video content to compatible Bravia TV sets.
