Leading Chinese wireless operator, China Mobile Ltd., is planning to introduce broadband internet services after the country completes an ongoing reorganization of its telecommunications industry, said company Chairman, Wang Jianzhou, in a recent interview.

China Mobile has been ordered by the Chinese government to purchase China Tietong Telecommunications Corp., which already serves a modest number of high-speed internet users.

“We will focus on broadband-based multimedia services, we’ll focus on corporate users,” Wang said in a recent Bloomberg Television interview, from the World Economic Forum’s New Champions meeting in Tianjin. “We will set up a strategy for fixed-mobile convergence services.”

Now that China is the world’s biggest internet market, China Mobile hopes to tap the expanding country’s rapidly expanding broadband sector, in order to offset increased competition in its core wireless business.

“The broadband market is still growing, so there’s potential in this business,” said Marvin Lo of the Daiwa Institute of Research, who gives China Mobile shares an ‘outperform’ rating.
