Despite being banned in many offices, instant messaging (IM) gained some credibility in the business world late last week as networking giant, Cisco Systems, purchased Jabber, a tech startup whose software enables real-time text and VoIP communication over the internet.

The acquisition of Jabber, which describes itself as a vendor of “commercial messaging solutions,” will allow Cisco to embed instant messaging features into its collaboration products, such as Cisco Unified Communications and the WebEx conferencing system.

The Jabber IM service will also be integrated with PostPath, another recent Cisco acquisition, which competes with Microsoft and Google in the online email and calendaring business.

Terms of the Jabber acquisition deal were not made public.
