KDDI to Introduce 1-Gbps Fiber-Optic Broadband Service in Japan
5:55 am on September 29, 2008 | Category: Internet, Telecom Services
Japanese telecom giant, KDDI, has announced plans to begin offering a 1-Gbps fiber optic broadband connection at a lower price than its current high-speed internet service of one tenth that speed.
The Hikari One Home Gigabit service (set to be available on October 1) will provide symmetrical upstream and downstream connection speeds of 1-Gbps at a cost of ¥5,460 ($51.40) per month, and can be bundled with cable TV and telephone service at an additional cost.
Japanese internet users already enjoy some of the fastest and cheapest broadband connections in the world due to aggressive investment by carriers in fiber-optic networks, as well as the country’s densely populated cities, which leave many homes and businesses within easy reach of a fiber-optic connection.
As of the end of June, fiber-optic networks had recently become the most popular method of internet access in Japan, with some 13 million users, compared to 12.3 million who remained with DSL and 4 million who used cable.
