Russia’s leading mobile phone operator, MTS, revealed on Friday that it had signed a deal with Apple Inc. to begin selling the popular iPhone device.

The deal obtained by MTS is not exclusive, meaning that the company will have to compete with rivals, Vimpelcom and MagaFon, which previously announced their intentions to sell the iPhone.

Although not yet officially available in Russia, the iPhone has been available on the country’s “gray market” for some time, at a cost of approximately $1,000, or five times the carrier-subsidized U.S. retail price. Nevertheless, it is estimated that around 500,000 iPhones are already in use in Russia, making it one of Apple’s biggest markets outside the U.S.
