American wireless operator, T-Mobile USA, said on Tuesday that it would unveil the “HTC Dream” handset – the first phone based on Google’s Android mobile operating system – at a news conference on September 23.

Details about the pricing, plans, and software will be available on that date, although the phone itself likely won’t hit the market until sometime next month.

The first Google phone is expected to challenge the Apple iPhone and Research In Motion’s BlackBerry devices in the American smartphone market. More Android-powered handsets will likely be available from other manufacturers and carriers in the months to come.
