FCC Chairman, Kevin Martin, says that he will support Verizon Wireless’s proposed acquisition of smaller rival, Alltel Corp., on the condition that Verizon sells assets in five additional markets (in addition to the 100 already negotiated) in order to preserve market competition.
The five-member Federal Communications Commission is scheduled to vote on the deal on November 4.
In addition to supporting the $28.1 billion Alltel acquisition, Martin recommended that the FCC approve Sprint Nextel’s proposed joint venture with wireless broadband provider, Clearwire, also expected to come before the commission on Nov. 4.
