Mobile Gaming Now a $1-Billion Industry in U.S.

The U.S. mobile gaming industry currently generates more than $1-billion annually, and is poised to contribute significantly to wireless data revenues in the years to come, according to new analysis by In-Stat.
Researchers were quick to point out, however, that mobile game developers continue to face difficult challenges.
“The mobile gaming development industry is highly fragmented due to the wide variety of mobile operating systems, available handsets, and lack of industry standardization,” explained In-Stat analyst, Jill Meyers. “This fragmentation has resulted in mobile developers and publishers making the difficult decision of spending finite resources developing games on the platforms they believe will have the best chance of success.”
Nevertheless, demand for mobile games is strengthening, which keeps the market profitable for savvy developers. 29.5% of U.S. wireless users play games on their cell phones, according to an In-Stat survey, and this strong demand is spilling over to other parts of the world.
In-Stat expects the worldwide mobile gaming market to top $6.8 billion by 2013.
