Struggling mobile phone giant, Motorola, is planning to revamp its business structure, with a heavy focus on Google’s recently-released Android operating system, according to sources cited in a new Wall Street Journal article.
The company’s recently appointed co-CEO, is reportedly also planning significant restructuring, possibly including another round of layoffs, in addition to the 10,000 employees already dismissed in recent quarters.
Four of the software platforms currently used to power Motorola devices will be discontinued in future devices, according to the Journal report, leaving only two operating systems, in addition to Android.
Motorola’s new plans, which could be announced as soon as tomorrow, will be intended to restore the company to its former success and make up for lost ground in the smartphone market, against Apple’s iPhone and RIM’s BlackBerry devices.
