A consortium of six companies has completed the first phase of a new underwater cable connecting the United States with China and Taiwan, and allowing for faster transpacific broadband communications.

The 11,000-mile (18,000 km) Trans-Pacific Express (TPE) will be the first direct link of its kind between the U.S. and China mainlands. It is being built as a joint effort between AT&T, Verizon Business, China Netcom, China Unicom, and Taiwan’s Chunghwa Telecom, at an estimated cost of US$500 million.

The need for additional cables was demonstrated just days after initial plans for the TPE were announced, when a powerful Boxing Day (2006) earthquake broke or damaged six underwater connections, severely compromising transpacific telecommunications.
