Apple Improves Email, Google Maps Functionality with iPhone Software Update

Apple has released a new software update for its popular iPhone 3G device, opening the door for a wide array of additional applications and features.
The iPhone 2.2 Software Update promises improved email access, including better formatting of HTML emails, as well as an enhanced version of the Safari mobile web browser. Users will now be able to access internet podcasts via the iTunes Store, and download internet audio content over-the-air in the same way as music files.
In addition to this, the software update improves the functionality of the Google Maps application, making it possible to not only view maps and satellite images, but zoom in to Street View mode, which “take(s) you on a virtual walking tour” of select cities.
“The focus is definitely now on apps,” commented IDC mobile phone analyst, Ryan Reith, venturing a theory about why the Apple iPhone is now outselling Research In Motion’s BlackBerry devices. “I think if you looked at RIM, they lag when it comes to software upgrades and Apple has made more progress in software upgrades.”
