As an increasing number of states and provinces ban handheld devices behind the wheel, a new gadget called the iLane is being marketed as the first hands-free mobile email solution, allowing users to interact with a nearby smartphone and manage their email inbox using simple voice commands.

The iLane “reads e-mails to the user out loud, on command, and it allows for access and control of other smartphone applications by voice command, including managing phone calls, SMS messages and calendars,” according to a press release by the manufacturer, IMS Inc.

The iLane is currently compatible with BlackBerry 8000-series devices, and other BlackBerries running OS 4.1 and newer. Compatibility with other operating systems will become available next year.

At a cost of $599, plus $7.99 a month to use, the iLane is priced well outside the standard consumer market. For enterprise users looking for a safe and legal way to check their email behind the wheel, however, it could be a godsend.

Information about the device is available at www.ilane.com.
