Prince Edward Island Reaches Rural Broadband Deal with Aliant
6:55 am on November 15, 2008 | Category: Internet, Telecom Services
The Canadian province of Prince Edward Island has announced plans to extend high-speed internet access to each and every one of its communities, through an $8.2 million deal with local telephone carrier, Aliant.
The plan, which allows for renewal of the government’s contract with Aliant, was outlined this week by PEI’s Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Rural Development Minister, Allan Campbell.
“It is estimated that more than 25 percent of Islanders and rural businesses do not have access to high speed internet,” Campbell said. Under the terms of the new plan, however, dialup should no longer be necessary to access the internet in rural PEI.

Aliant is a telecom provider, so it will be DSL based.
In the words of Aliant PEI executive, Bruce Howatt: “It will be mainly wireline high speed based on DSL and there will be a wireless backhaul component to it. This expansion will allow us to provide high speed services in every community in Prince Edward Island.”

I was just wondering if anyone knew the date that high speed will be coming to Richmond on route 127, because I have dial-up right now, and I’m really getting fed up with it
Thanks
