Waterloo, Ontario-based smartphone maker, Research In Motion, is hoping to challenge the popular Apple iPhone with an updated version of its BlackBerry Curve device.

The Curve 8900 comes equipped with built-in GPS navigation technology, an updated 3.2-megapixel digital camera, and enhanced multimedia software, capable of playing internet podcasts.

The latest BlackBerry was launched in Germany yesterday by T-Mobile, and should be available in U.S. and Canadian stores in early 2009.

Apple sold 6.9 million iPhones in the third quarter, surpassing RIM (6.1 million) for the first time ever. It remains to be seen whether this was a temporary surge, brought on by the worldwide launch of the iPhone 3G, or a long-term trend capable of weathering an onslaught of impressive new BlackBerry devices.
